“At least 14 people have died due to flooding triggered by heavy rains in Somalia and thousands remain trapped,” according to BBC Nov. 6, 2023. Somalia is facing flooding due to rising water levels in the Juba and Shabelle rivers, causing over 47,000 people to flee their homes. The Somali government has declared an emergency in Jubbaland, Hirshabelle, and South West states, with heavy downpours and flooding causing water-borne diseases. The country is experiencing heavier than normal rains after one of its worst droughts in four decades, potentially causing 43,000 deaths. Climate change is making extreme rainfall more likely, and temperatures will continue to rise unless government cuts emissions.
