Jane Goodall Passes Away — The Jane Goodall Institute, Oct. 1
Renowned ecologist Jane Goodall passed away in her sleep on Oct. 1. Known throughout the world for her groundbreaking studies revolving around the behavior of chimpanzees, Goodall leaves behind an enumerable legacy. After growing up in England, Goodall traveled to Africa to follow her dream of studying animals. She arrived in Kenya, where she worked with celebrated paleontologist Dr. Louis Leakey. This provided Goodall the opportunity to travel to Gombe Tanzania on a quest to study the chimpanzee population there. Once there she made a variety of groundbreaking discoveries, including the discovery that chimpanzees use tools, that would make her famous. Goodall would go on to work globally to further a unifying vision of environmental protection.
