Great Barrier Coral Decline — BBC, Nov. 5
Scientists now acknowledge that due to human-caused climate change, the Earth may have passed its first irreversible tipping point, which is the ability for coral reefs to regrow. As global ocean temperatures rise, coral reefs experience an event known as bleaching, where the coral loses its color and dies shortly after. It is now highly likely that the rate of coral bleaching has overtaken that of coral growth, leading to a compounding problem as reefs are no longer able to naturally sustain themselves. “The Great Barrier Reef is headed for a ‘grim future’ and will suffer a ‘rapid coral decline’ by 2050 but parts may recover if global warming is kept below 2C, a new study has found,” according to BBC.
