“A drop in water levels of the Amazon has revealed rock carvings which had been mostly submerged since they were carved more than a thousand years ago,” according to BBC Oct. 24, 2023. A severe drought in northern Brazil has led to the discovery of human faces carved into rocks on the shore, indicating pre-Columbian occupation. The carvings were last seen in 2010 when the Rio Negro river’s water level dropped to 13.63m. The Brazilian government attributes the drought to climate change and the El Niño weather phenomenon, which has caused rainfall and river levels to drop to near record levels.
