“One of Iran’s most prominent film directors, Dariush Mehrjui, has been found dead alongside his wife,” according to BBC Oct. 16, 2023. Iranian filmmaker Mehrjui and his Vahideh wife Mohammadifar were found with stab injuries in their home near Tehran. Mehrjui, a founder of Iranian new-wave cinema, was known for his realism and literature-inspired films. Despite receiving numerous awards, his films were often censored in Iran. Seven people have been arrested in connection with the killing.
