Pope Francis passes, Leo XIV elected pope. – NYT
Leader of the Catholic Church Pope Francis passed away April 21. This prompted an event known as a conclave, where cardinals (the highest up figures in the Catholic Church beside the pope) under 80 years old gather to select a new pope. The newest pope Leo XIV, whose given name is Robert Prevost, was elected March 8. Leo XIV is now the 267th pope and the leader of more than 1.4 billion followers.
