Who doesn’t want to be a kid again? ‘A Minecraft Movie’ took the world by storm because everyone wants to relive a little of their childhood. Minecraft has been around since May 17, 2009, and just about everyone has spent quite a bit of time in the world of ‘Minecraft,’ building all they can imagine. Although it could make many emotional due to the nostalgic music included in the movie, it is still a captivating.
Directed by Jared Hess [Napoleon Dynamite], the movie takes a group of misfit teens and throws them into the Minecraft world, literally. Jason Momoa plays this wild character named Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, but the real star was Jack Black as Steve. He totally nails the goofy, wise mentor vibe, and it’s hilarious every time he’s on screen. The cast also includes Emma Myers, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and a bunch of other big names like Jennifer Coolidge and Kate McKinnon, which keeps things entertaining. The visuals were cool, the action was fun, and it actually had some heart too. Honestly, even if you’re not a huge Minecraft fan, it’s still worth watching.
Along with many others, freshman Ian Schenck found much nostalgia in the movie.
“I have played Minecraft since I was around five or six, so seeing the movie was something I was extremely interested in,” he said.
Not only did high schoolers played this game, but many people played along with their siblings — including my brother, fifth grader Benjamin Kossbiel.
“When the characters went into the redstone cave, it reminded me of making a hotel made of all blue lapis with my sister,” he said.
This movie is made to be family-friendly. Schenck thinks all people should see it.
“I wouldn’t tell anyone to avoid it,” he said. “I think it’s a great movie, and I have recommended all of my family and close friends to watch it.”
Although ‘A Minecraft Movie’ was a blast in to the past, there are also many new additions that were in the movie and not in the game. A new phrase that did not exist before
the movie is “Chicken Jockey.” This phrase has made many people do crazy things. The environment of this film at the theaters is a rather fun experience.
“The vibe was great,” Schenck said. “All of the story and the music was enjoyable, and I was laughing the whole way through, it was hysterical.”
Not only was the nostalgia and environment of the movie great, but so was the overall movie. The plot was very engaging and kept me on my toes. The movie had a lot more details than I was expecting. Schenck also noticed these details.
“The first time we get to see the Overworld and The Nether was definitely a ‘Wow’ moment since all of the worlds were developed so intricately, and with so much detail,” he said.
One of the negatives about the movie is the characters and their actors. Some of the characters were portrayed as well as I had hoped; however, some actors didn’t play the parts as well as I know they could have, so some scenes or moments seemed bland. Another negative was how they made some graphics appeared. They did not make some of the animals and mobs look the same as they did in the game, which was a little off-putting due to everything else being identical to how the game looked.
In the end, ‘A Minecraft Movie’ does a great job turning a game about building and surviving into something way bigger and more meaningful. It’s funny, creative, and full of surprises, and the cast makes it fun to watch. Whether you’ve played Minecraft for years or don’t know a creeper from a crafting table, this movie has something for everyone.
