Germany held its federal elections on Feb. 2, 2025 with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU/CSU), a center-right party, winning a plurality in the German Parliament. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AFD) came in second place, doubling the number of seats they had in the previous government. In third place came the center left Social Democrats (SPD) losing their current control of Parliament. In the German Parliament there are many parties, none of which ever win an outright majority, so coalition governments will always need to be formed. The CDU/CSU will likely form a coalition with SPD, uniting the two mainstream parties, primarily to keep the highly controversial AFD out of power. These elections are likely to have major global consequences due to Germany widely being viewed as a leading figure in the European Union. – AP
