A rite of passage to most, a day that some dream of their entire childhood, one of the biggest events in all of highschool, Prom.
Although everybody knows what Prom is, not everybody knows the history behind it. Formal dances for young adults can be traced all the way back to ancient Greece but the history of promenade or better known in America as Prom originates from the 18th and 19th century debutante balls, which was a ball to show off eligible young men and women of high wealth and status. Although debutante balls were originally only for the rich, Prom, as we now know it, is a universal experience for anyone who wishes to attend. Not only is it open to anyone but oftentimes it is a very memorable experience that they carry with them throughout life.
As kids, most little girls look up to their favorite princess and dream of being them when they grow up. Prom is the perfect time for girls to get all done up and live out their fantasies of feeling and looking like a true princess. Although Prom is one of the biggest and most looked forward to events in high school it can also be a little problematic. Think about it, there are months of planning that go into prom and so many aspects that go into it. From finding the perfect dress to a perfect date it can be extremely stressful. There is also the financial aspect of things with the original ticket and every detail of your outfit, finances can be a really restricting element to some. Even if you are attending, be respectful of those who can’t or don’t want to attend.
It can be an extremely stressful couple months leading up to the event and night of. When you are in these stressful situations around so many of your peers it can be really easy to make dumb decisions or fall to peer pressure. There are more than 4,000 teenagers who die every year due to underage drinking. Make sure that you are making smart decisions on prom night. With that being said this is an extremely memorable event that for most attending is their last high school dance. So live it up, have fun and don’t be afraid to go out with a bang.
