Heartstopper continued its journey of acceptance and love with its third season. The show is based on Alice Osemans’ award-winning graphic novels and the new season brings to life the growing love story between Nick and Charlie. Their relationship was established in the previous seasons but now they’re getting into their issues and learning to move forward together.
Season 3 is about how all the characters, not just Nick and Charlie, grow and change. Kit Connor’s character, Nick Nelson, learns to put himself first and find others around him to help, not just his boyfriend. It is an impactful part of his story and Alice Oseman shows it beautifully throughout the show. Joe Locke, who plays Charlie, does an amazing job showing how Charlie deals with his mental health in the show. The therapy scenes and flashbacks were done exceptionally well. The Love story between Nick and Charlie is still there but the issues getting brought up and addressed bring a layer of realness to the characters.
The show also gets into the struggles of school, family problems, and what it’s like to be a queer teenager in a world that’s still not fully accepting. Alice Oseman handles these issues carefully in the show, making Heartstopper more than just a love story. It’s also about growing up, learning to find self-acceptance, and finding your group of people.
The way Heartstopper looks on screen is still one of the best parts of the show. The soft pastel colors and warm lighting show their happier moments and when things get darker and more emotional, cooler lighting is set. The animated parts show how the characters are thinking or add to emotional moments. I’ve never seen an animation inside the show like Haartstopper does and it’s very creative, bringing in touches of a graphic novel feel. The music chosen for the show also fits perfectly with the story, a combination of indie and pop songs sounds how each scene should feel. No matter the moment the song always sounds like it belongs there.
Heartstopper’s story is for anyone who needs to feel seen. The show has something for everyone, especially if you’re queer. There is representation of all kinds of people in this show, which is part of what makes it unique. From race to gender and sexuality, this show has it all.
I will say there are some cringey parts of this show but that’s to be expected from a teenage love story. If you aren’t into hallmark movies, this show probably won’t be for you. Other than that, I have no negative feelings towards the new season.
Heartstopper Season 3 is everything fans could want. The show has a good mix of love and emotions that doesn’t leave you feeling down after you’re done watching it. The show reminds you how important having people you love and trust around you really is. Heartsopper never fails to leave the viewer anticipating what comes next but at the same time content.
If you are looking for a good heartwarming TV show this is the way to go. It represents all kinds of love, platonic and romantic so if that’s something you’re interested in my full recommendation goes to Heartstopper.
