“Twisters” is a disaster and thriller film directed by Lee Isaac Chung and was released this past July. This movie acts as a standalone sequel to “Twister” (1996) meaning it has little connection to the prior movie and you can watch it without a complete understanding of the series. “Twisters” is set in Oklahoma where Kate Carter, one of the main characters, works with her friends Javi, Praveen, Addy and her boyfriend, Jeb, who are storm chasers. Kate and her friends launch beads into a tornado hoping to reduce its power and gather information for research. Unfortunately, the tornado became too powerful and ended up killing Jeb, Addy and Praveen. Katie is the only one left but has feelings of guilt and blames herself for misjudging the tornado’s strength and ends up quitting storm chasing. Five years later, Katie is living in New York City working in a NOAA office, which is The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Javi is working at a tornado radar company and offers Katie a one-week position to test new tornado scanning equipment. Katie questions whether she should accept his offer, but caves in after Javi warns her about a damaging tornado approaching. They join in Oklahoma where they also meet social media storm chaser star, Tyler Owens, who is hoping to capture a tornado outbreak. The team ended up tracking down the tornado and evacuated the community to safety. They celebrate the experiment’s success and Katie goes to the airport to make her way back to New York City where she is surprised by Tyler, however, her flight gets delayed due to high winds and the two leave for the storm. The ending scene shows Katie, Tyler and Javi joining a new tornado radar business. I found this movie to be somewhat predictable and simple, but there are moments of high thrill and they captured the effects of the tornado amazingly. I didn’t feel as drawn into the movie as I had hoped, but the editing and soundtrack were well picked. I probably wouldn’t watch this again but maybe someone else will!
3/5 Stars.
