“Doctors across Gaza have described operating on patients without anesthesia, turning people with chronic conditions away, and treating rotting wounds with limited medical supplies,” according to BBC Feb. 18, 2024. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that 23 hospitals in Gaza are not functioning, with 12 partially functioning and one minimally functioning. The health agency claims that air strikes and a lack of supplies have depleted the under-resourced system. Many hospitals are overcrowded and have limited equipment, with some operating at over 300% of their bed capacity. Doctors struggle to work with limited supplies, including oxygen, anesthetics, ICU supplies, antibiotics, and painkillers. Around 20,000 healthcare workers in Gaza are struggling to survive and care for their families, with many not working due to their struggles. The number of staff and volunteers at a hospital has grown due to displaced people coming to help, but it is not enough to cope with the volume of patients and injuries they receive. Injured people come to the hospital with brain injuries, broken ribs, broken limbs, and sometimes losing an eye, but “because of the shortage of painkillers, we leave patients to scream for hours and hours,” one told the BBC.
