“The former president of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández, has appeared in a New York courtroom where he stands accused of protecting drug traffickers,” according to BBC Feb. 21, 2024. Juan Orlando Hernández, former president of Honduras, is facing charges of conspiring to import cocaine to the US and carrying weapons in furtherance of the conspiracy. Prosecutors claim Hernández ran the Central American nation like a “narco-state,” accepting millions of dollars in bribes from cocaine traffickers. In exchange, he allegedly tipped them off about planned raids and ordered the army to protect them. “Hernández has denied any wrongdoing and pleaded not guilty. If convicted of all three charges, he could face life in prison,” said BBC. He was arrested just over two years after leaving office and is currently in pre-trial detention in New York.
