“Hundreds of towns and villages in Bolivia have been put under alert as torrential rains continue to wreak havoc in the South American country,” according to BBC Feb 19, 2024. Bolivia has experienced 33 deaths since November due to heavy rains, causing landslides and river bursts. The death toll is eight times higher than last year. Officials are monitoring dams that could overflow, with 10 municipalities on high alert and 279 on orange alert. “Humanitarian aid has been sent to Achocalla, La Paz province, where a 35-year-old woman and her two children were buried in a mudslide,” said BBC. Over 20 people were injured. The Incachaca dam in La Paz province is also at its maximum level. Climate change has made extreme rainfall more likely, and the world has already warmed by about 1.1 celcius since the industrial era began.
