“US-based biotechnology and genetic engineering firm Colossal Biosciences has signed an agreement with Mauritian Wildlife Foundation to help bring back the dodo from extinction,” according to BBC Nov. 27, 2023. The Mauritian Wildlife Foundation has partnered with Colossal Biosciences to revive and rewild the flightless dodo, a bird native to Mauritius. The partnership, signed 10 months after Colossal announced its plans, aims to return a “proxy” version of the bird with edited DNA. The team, led by evolutionary scientist Professor Beth Shapiro, also plans to work on genetic rescue of the pink pigeon, which is threatened by a lack of genetic diversity.
