“Homosexuality should not be a criminal offence and people should be helped to understand the issue better, a top cardinal from Ghana has told the BBC,” according to BBC Nov. 27, 2023. Ghanaian Cardinal Peter Turkson has criticized the Catholic Church for imposing harsh penalties on LGBT people, which contradicts Roman Catholic bishops who view homosexuality as “despicable.” In July, Ghanaian MPs supported a bill making identifying as LGBT punishable with a three-year prison sentence. Turkson argued that LGBT people may not be criminalized because they have committed no crime and called for education to understand homosexuality. He also criticized strict anti-gay measures in African countries like Uganda.
