“Jailed Iranian human right activist Narges Mohammadi has begun a hunger strike, a month after she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, her family says,” according to BBC Nov. 6, 2023. Iran’s prisoner, Narges Mohammadi, is protesting against the country’s denial of medical care to inmates and its mandatory hijab law. Mohammadi needs treatment for heart and lung conditions, but a prosecutor is blocking her transfer to the hospital. The Norwegian Nobel Committee, which awarded her the peace prize, has expressed concern over the inhumane and morally unacceptable requirement that female inmates must wear a hijab for hospitalization. Mohammadi has been arrested 13 times, convicted five times, and sentenced to 31 years in prison.
