“Ousmane Sonko, a detained Senegalese opposition figure who has been on hunger strike, has regained consciousness after falling into a coma on Monday, according to one of his lawyers,” according to BBC, Oct. 26, 2023. Senegal’s President Sonko has been facing multiple legal battles, including sexual assault, corruption, and insurrection charges. He claims the charges are politically motivated to prevent him from standing in the upcoming presidential election. Sonko has undertaken hunger strikes to demand his release, but they have weakened him and he will remain in hospital. His condition remains uncertain, and his party, the Patriots of Senegal, has been dissolved.
