“Ugandan lawmakers have rejected a government proposal to allow 15-year-old girls to access birth control pills to reduce high levels of pregnancy,” according to BBC Oct. 11, 2023. D no eputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa has criticized a proposal to offer contraceptives to 15-year-old girls in Uganda, arguing that it would “formalise the defilement” of girls. The proposal, which has been criticized by MP Lucy Akello, has raised concerns about the potential harm to girls. A survey shows that nearly a quarter of 15- to 19-year-old girls in Uganda are either pregnant or already mothers. Primary Healthcare Minister Margaret Muhanga defended the proposal, stating that access to reproductive health information is a fundamental right and should be provided without stigma, discrimination, or judgment.
