What’s Trending in 2020

While it might not have been new in 2020, TikTok definitely took the spotlight, perhaps as one of the biggest trends of the year. TikTok is an app where users can create and share short videos. While the app originally came out in 2016, it gained popularity quickly during 2020. It became a fun, creative way for people to pass the time during the pandemic.

Among Us
“Among Us,” an app that became popular towards the end of 2020, is a game where players are assigned to be a crewmate or an impostor. The goal of this game is for the impostors to go undetected and eliminate all the crewmates until only the impostors are left. The crewmates, however, try to complete various tasks while trying to determine who the impostor is and vote them out.

Tiger King
Many new shows and series were released during the year, one of which being Netflix’s documentary series “Tiger King.” This series was first released in late March, becoming a very popular way to pass the time spent staying at home. The show focuses on the life of zookeeper Joe Exotic and his breeding of tigers. Undoubtedly, the show has intrigued countless people, bringing along many questions as well.

Animal Crossing
“Animal Crossing: New Horizons” is a simulation style video game released in late March for the Nintendo Switch. The player is dropped on a deserted island where they begin to expand it to create a place for other animals to live. During the pandemic, many people have found joy and entertainment in creating islands in the game.

Outer Banks
“Outer Banks,” released on Netflix in mid April, became a favorite show of many very quickly after its release. The show focuses on the adventures of a group of teenagers while they search for the truth about John B’s missing father. Following the release, many fans wanted to experience the aesthetic of the show for themselves and began recreating hairstyles and outfits that matched those of their favorite characters.

Whipped Coffee
Dalgona coffee, also known as whipped coffee, was a popular treat that rose in popularity during 2020. The drink is made by mixing hot water, instant coffee mix and sugar, often adding in milk once it has the desired whipped or creamy texture. Many people have found and created their own recipes to make the perfect whipped coffee drink.

Chloe Ting:
Two Weeks Shred
Chloe Ting, a popular YouTuber known for her fitness videos, received much attention during 2020 as well. She creates many workout programs that people can buy, some even for free. Her “Two Weeks Shred” program grabbed the spotlight as a free program she had originally created in 2019. This two week program consists of various workouts for arms, legs, abs and full body. During the lockdown, many people chose to attempt the challenger, hoping to see the effects for themselves.
